Boys, Laila came to see, treated friendship the way they treated the sun: its existence undisputed; its radiance best enjoyed, not beheld directly.

About This Quote

Ayan Ali, the author of the book Laila and the Sun: The Story of a Friendship, had a close friend, Laila Nasreddin. She was a very bright student and she wanted to explore different ideas and concepts in her life. One day while she was at school, she saw a boy named Ayan Ali sitting alone in the classroom. He was reading a book quietly on his own.

When he had found an interesting chapter, he would thumb through it and then move on to another one. Ayan Ali belonged to an old family in Jalalabad. His family owned many acres of land and had many businesses. However, Ayan was not interested in their business and did not like farming.

He did not like the family traditions set by his ancestors and wanted to travel away from home. Ayan’s father allowed him to travel for three months every year, provided he brought back some money from his travels. Ayan suggested that he could get more money if he went abroad since there were many opportunities for people like him over there. Laila’s mother passed away when she was young and her father did not want Laila to travel abroad with him because he feared that her life may be in danger in a foreign country. However, Laila believed in Ayan’s abilities and wanted to bring him back so that he could start a new life without the rules set by his family.

He had never travelled abroad with his father before so no one knew what he would do once he got there. However, when Ayan arrived at the airport, his father saw him off with great joy although he missed his son very much. In fact, he was overwhelmed with happiness seeing him off because they had never been apart from each other for such a long time before. A few days later when Ayan returned from his travels, his father was waiting for him with a smile on his face even though he missed his son very much also.

And this is how love makes you feel when you are apart from someone you love but do not see them for a long time every day or every week because they are far away from you over seas or even in another country or maybe even in another continent or even another part of your own country where your family might not be living anymore or where you cannot find your relatives easily due to war or any other situation that makes it difficult for you to meet up with your loved ones no matter how hard
